Herbs and Health

As early as the Ancient Egyptians, herbs have been used as remedies for a variety of conditions. Originally, trial and error and keen observation were the methods older civilizations used to practise their herbal skills. Today, the approach is more organized with research playing an important role.

The Chinese and Indian cultures relied heavily on herbal treatments. In China, now, there are schools of herbal medicine and herbal dispensaries in hospitals. Today, in the UK, you will find herbal dispensaries in large shopping centres.

The Most Well Known Herbs

Most people will have heard of Ginseng [the most famous plant in China used for health remedies], Evening Primrose Oil and Aloe Vera. These are the most commonly used remedies but there are many more that can be used in their dried form, as oils, capsules or as herbal infusions.

Ginseng

Ginseng is the most well-known remedy and has been used as an all-round cure. It is used to strengthen the immune system and stimulate the nervous system. Each person responds individually, depending on their particular needs. It is said to have either stimulating or calming properties.

Siberian Ginseng

As its name suggests, Siberian Ginseng originates in Russia and is less well-known that its Chinese counterpart. It is used as a tonic to improve general health.

Evening Primrose Oil

The fatty oil from the seeds of this native of North America is taken in the form of supplements that are commonly used to treat Eczema and premenstrual tension.

Aloe Vera

The spiny leaves of this succulent produce two forms of aloe vera. Aloe vera gel is used externally to treat skin irritations and minor burns. Many believe that skin can be healed by the gel. Aloe vera juice is also produced from the plant and this is used as a tonic. Consuming the juice is not a proven remedy.

Other Herbs Used as Remedies

Many more easily available herbs are used to help a variety of ailments often as a last resort, or as an alternative to prescribed medicines.

Basil

Basil is used as an accompaniment to tomato dishes. It is also a natural tranquilizer and helps to calm the nervous system. It is used to help stomach cramps and digestion.

Bay

Bay helps to stimulate digestion. It is used as a seasoning in bouquet garni and in soups and stews.

Coriander

The fragrant coriander leaves are often used in curries. It is thought that coriander helps the stomach and the heart as well as treating urinary tract infections.

Fennel

You may recognise the distinctive feathery leaves of fennel. They taste like aniseed and are used in sauces for fish. Both the seeds and leaves can be used to help digestion and to help prevent excessive wind, insomnia, nausea and vomiting.

Mint

Mint can be used in both savoury and sweet desserts. It is the most usual accompaniment to lamb dishes but can also be added to sweet cheesecake recipes. It helps digestion. A cold can be relieved by taking a mint infusion.

Parsley

This widely used herb is one of the most nutritious garnishes as it has both vitamin C and iron. It can acts as a breath freshener after eating garlic.

Rosemary

Rosemary is also used in lamb dishes. It is supposed to act as a stimulant to the nervous system and the circulatory system. It is thought to aid indigestion and flatulence. As a rosemary herb infusion drink it may relieve nervous or tension headaches and colds. A sore throat may be soothed by rosemary as a gargle.

Sage

Sage tea and sage capsules are popular products to help excessive sweating and hot flushes. They are an alternative to using hormone replacement to ease flushes. Some women have found relief from these uncomfortable menopausal symptoms.

Thyme

This is a very aromatic herb. An infusion can be used for coughs or catarrh.

Herbal Infusions [Teas] - An alternative to your popular breakfast tea!

Herbal teas make a good alternative to ordinary tea and coffee. These milder flavours and caffeine free teas are much gentler on sensitive digestive systems.

Basil

Basil tea is thought to be drunk to relieve nausea.

Camomile

Camomile tea drunk before bedtime is said to help to relax and calm you and is helpful in the relief of insomnia.

Elderflower

It might be helpful to those suffering from colds and flu and sinus problems.

Peppermint

Peppermint tea is usually drunk after a meal and eases nausea and reduces wind.

Raspberry

Raspberry tea is taken to have a calming effect on you.

Rosehip

Rosehip tea is a good source of vitamin C.

Having Your Own Supply of Herbs All Year Round (it's cheaper, too!)

It is advisable to dry your own herbs, if possible, so that you can use them throughout the year. To have your own supply is not only more convenient than having to go out shopping, but it will also be cheaper.

Drying the herbs

As soon as the herbs are harvested it is advisable to begin the drying process as they will begin to lose their medicinal properties. An airing cupboard is an ideal place to dry them as it is warm, dry, dark and well ventilated. Make up small bunches of bay, rosemary, sage and thyme and hang them with stems upwards. it is a good idea to place a large tray underneath the bunches to catch the brittle leaves as you rub them gently off the stems.

Larger leaves, like basil, can be spread on muslim which has been stretched on a frame so that air can circulate.

Using herbs in cooking

If a recipe suggests a tablespoon of fresh herbs, use only a teaspoon of dried herbs as they will produce a more concentrated flavour.

Frozen herb ice cubes

An easy way to store herbs, other than in tightly fitting containers, is to freeze finely chopped herbs in an ice-cube. Use about a tablespoon of herbs for each cube. When you are ready to add it to your saucepan or casserole then simply add straight from the freezer. What could be more simpler?

Availability

Herbs are around us every day. You'll find them in the supermarket, at the garden centre, and, best of all, in your own garden. If you are able to grow and dry your own you should feel very pleased with yourself, especially as you will have saved some of the housekeeping budget!

Success of using Herbal Remedies

There are never any hard and fast rules for the success of herbal remedies. It is very much the case of whether an individual responds to the herb. Some people report more success than others but it may always be worth trying a particular herb. Often a trial needs to be for one or two months, at least.

Early Symptoms Diabetes Patients Suffer

It is important to know the symptoms diabetes patients suffer before they are diagnosed. Watching your child become a Type 1 Diabetic is scary, but being aware of what to look for will help you know when to seek medical attention. You will not be able to notice the signs of Type 1 Diabetes overnight as they will become more pronounced over several weeks. At least that is what happened before our son was diagnosed with diabetes mellitus at the age of 2. If you find yourself in a similar situation and wonder what could be causing a series of behaviors that seem to have come out of nowhere, you should consider the possibility that your child is now one of the millions of children with diabetes.

Excessive Thirst

Children with Type 1 Diabetes will become very thirsty. One of the reasons for this is the abundance of ketones that have accumulated in the body. The body needs to rid itself of this toxic byproduct of fat burning so it causes the diabetic to become extremely thirsty. Many diabetics describe this thirst as unquenchable. With my son it began by asking for water at bedtime. Eventually he was begging for water at all times, and he was able to drink an entire 20 ounce bottle of water in one gulp.

Frequent Urination

Because of the excessive thirst you can bet there will be a frequent need to urinate. With young children with diabetes like my son, this can be a big mess. At night his diapers could not hold the amount of urine that he was producing. In fact, the last night before we took him to the emergency room, he soaked an entire queen size bed. The need to urinate can be unbearable, so if you see this in your child, Type 1 Diabetes should be considered.

Increased Appetite

Because the body cannot process sugar for energy it thinks it needs to ingest more food. This can lead to an increased appetite that you did not expect to see.

Weight Loss

Despite the increased appetite, an undiagnosed Type 1 diabetic will still lose weight. Since the body cannot use sugar for energy, it primarily uses fat as its energy source. As you would expect, this increased consumption of fat will cause a child with diabetes to lose weight. My son did not actually lose weight, but on the day of his diagnosis he weighed the same as he did 5 months prior, which is unusual for a two-year-old.

Increased Irritability

Our son became increasingly irritable as his undiagnosed diabetes progressed. Still today, we are clued in to the fact that his blood sugar is too high if he suddenly becomes extremely argumentative and irritable.

Lethargic Attitude

Our typically playful two-year-old son became withdrawn in social situations. He would stand in the corner with his sippy cup and watch all of the other kids play. He had almost no energy to play with his friends.

Blurry Vision

Blurry vision can be a difficult symptom to see in younger diabetes patients since they may not be able to tell you that something is wrong with their eyesight. But older kids might see a change in their vision.

Tests That Can Be A Clue To Type 1 Diabetes

If you start to notice some of these symptoms diabetes patients will show, there are two tests that can be given to check for diabetes. The first is checking for ketones with ketone sticks that can found at just about any local pharmacy. The test is easy and painless and will immediately show the level of ketones in the body. The second test is to check the glucose level in your child's blood. It requires a finger prick and some diabetic supplies which can most likely be borrowed from a friend or family member that is a diabetic. Each of these tests can help tell you if you need to take a trip to the emergency room or if you can put your mind at ease.

When In Doubt, Seek Medical Attention

Type 1 Diabetes is not a disease that should be taken lightly. There is no cure for the disease, and it requires a daily regimen of blood checks and insulin injections. Putting off seeing the doctor will not make the disease go away. If treatment is not given quickly enough diabetic ketoacidosis can set in which can result in a much more serious and critical situation. So if you have even the slightest worry that your child is now one of the millions of children with diabetes you should visit your doctor or emergency room immediately. You also might want to pack a bag, because if your child is a diabetic, he or she will be admitted to the hospital for a few days.

Living with diabetes is not easy. But it is manageable. Knowing the symptoms diabetes patients display will help you down the path of your new journey.

Dengue Fever

It is a non-contagious disease being spread by mosquitoes to the human community. The virus they carry to human is fatally dangerous and if untreated, the victim could even collapse to death. As evident from the name, it is a fever accompanied by various other hazardous symptoms like low blood pressure, pain and excessive bleeding in abdomen or chest.

CAUSES: The causative agent is DENV virus which enters the body from a mosquito bite and attaches to the body cells into which it replicates and mobilizes to the body’s immune system. It is observed that the body’s defense action after failing to counteract the virus becomes a means of is duplication due to which the disease takes a course of vicious cycle. Mosquitoes carrying this virus could even be found near the cleanest waters. Repeated dengue fever shows infection with each of four different types of DENV virus.

RISK FACTORS:
Inhabiting areas of moist climate near rivers or ocean could increase susceptibility to the mosquitoes subsequently to the virus. Second dengue fever due to a different type of DENV virus would be even severer than the previous one.

SYMPTOMS:
High temperature, headache, backache, nausea, vomiting, joint and muscle pain, bleeding underneath the skin, suppressed body defense mechanism, generalized damage to vessels all over the body leading to bleeding and pain are all the symptoms of dengue fever.

TESTS: CBC or complete blood count of blood showing decreased white blood cells, decreased platelets and then metabolic acidosis with high hematocrit and low albumin level indicates dengue fever. Physical examination of liver and inspection for ascites along with the tourniquet test in which the cuff for measuring blood pressure is applied for five or more minutes and observation for rashes or purple spots on the arm is made are effective methods to diagnose dengue fever.

TREATMENT:
No approved vaccine is available for the disease but many are under clinical trials. An important factor is that the vaccine might actually trigger the virus to duplicate instead of sensitizing it.

PREVENTION:
Remove any water containers nearby before sleeping. Use insecticides, bio-control agents and mosquitos’ repellants to keep them away. Covering the skin with clothes before going to sleep could effectively prevent mosquito from reaching your blood.

Depression

Depression a disorder in which a person feels sad, hopeless, irritable, guilty and helpless. It is a mental condition which could affect physically on the body leading to many complications.

CAUSES: One of the major causes is the trauma of having someone lost in your life. Death of a loved one and loss of financial assets are frequently faced trauma by the depressed individuals. Moreover, brain have specialized transmitter substances that transmit information with the body and brain, change in the levels of those neurotransmitters could markedly cause depression. Hormones, substances produced by different glands in the body could also give rise to depression. Apart from these, genetic traits could also make one individual prone to depression.

RISK FACTORS:
Depression could easily give rise to suicidal attempts if not considered for a treatment. The person goes on with his pessimistic thoughts in which he thinks he would find solace in death and then he goes for it. Depression is a state of mental illness and with having one’s mind depressed, physical illnesses like blood pressure change, anxiety, kidney problems and GIT problems could arise.

SYMPTOMS:
The patient seems ill, sad and looses sleep. His interest in social interaction and se is reduced markedly and apart from loosing physical vigor, he is unable to make decisions about logical phenomenon. The patient might start crying for no apparent reason and his thinking process is slowed down.

TESTS: Blood tests are taken to check the level of hormones such as testosterone, thyroxin, ESR, infection and electrolytes. Cognitive tests are also performed to check the patient of possible psychosis and dementia.

TREATMENT:
Social counseling could relieve the depressed patient of trauma of loss. The affected individual is persuaded towards positive aspects of life and prevented from taking things in his life on the negative side. Drugs called as antidepressants such as selective serotonin uptake inhibitors are also advised and electroconvulsive therapy is resorted in extreme cases.

PREVENTION:
Abstaining from smoking, alcohol consumption, getting enough sleep, making a strong social collaboration, healthy social interaction, exercise, meditation, musical therapy and healthy diet full of vitamins and minerals could minimize the rate of depression an individual might face in his life.

Cardiovascular Diseases

Avoiding heart attacks and strokes:

Don't be a victim, protect yourself
Cardiovascular diseases are killing more and more people around the world, striking rich and poor alike. Those who survive a heart attack or stroke often need to take long-term medical treatment. These diseases can seriously affect the life of both the patient and his or her family. Yet so many heart attacks and strokes could be prevented. That is why you should read this booklet, it explains why heart attacks and strokes happen and how you can avoid them.

The atlas of heart disease and stroke

One of the strategies to respond to the challenges to population health and well being by the global epidemic of heart attack and stroke is to provide actionable information relevant to policy level, populations and individuals at risk. As part of such efforts, WHO in collaboration with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has produced for the wider audience, "The Atlas of Heart Disease and Stroke". The atlas addresses the global epidemic of heart disease and stroke in a clear and accessible format. This highly valuable reference material has been designed for use by policy makers, national and international organizations, health professionals and the general public. It is a must-have and a must-read.

Rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease

Rheumatic heart disease poses a major challenge to public health and is the most prevalent heart disease in children. A WHO Study group reviewed the current scientific knowledge of rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease, as well as the medical and public health related practices, and revised the Jones diagnostic criteria for rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease. The present report provides practical recommendations for an evidence-based approach to the prevention and management of rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease. It also provides practical guidance for implementing cost-effective programmes for controlling these diseases. The report will be of interest to clinicians, policy-makers and public health professionals.

Prevention of recurrent heart attacks and strokes in low and middle income populations
This publication summarizes the evidence for the effectiveness of interventions for secondary prevention of coronary heart disease (CHD) and cerebrovascular disease (CeVD). A commentary on the evidence for cardiovascular prevention in peripheral vascular disease and diabetes is also included. Each review of evidence is followed by a short summary of clinical recommendations for secondary prevention.

Cardiovascular disease: prevention and control

Facts

  • CVD made up 16.7 million, or 29.2% of total global deaths according to World Health Report 2003.
  • Around 80% of CVD deaths took place in low and middle-income countries.
  • By 2010, CVD will be the leading cause of death in developing countries.
  • At least 20 million people survive heart attacks and strokes every year; many require continuing costly clinical care.
  • Heart disease has no geographic, gender or socio-economic boundaries.

An estimated 16.7 million - or 29.2% of total global deaths - result from the various forms of cardiovascular disease (CVD), many of which are preventable by action on the major primary risk factors: unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, and smoking. More than 50% of the deaths and disability from heart disease and strokes, which together kill more than 12 million people each year, can be cut by a combination of simple, cost-effective national efforts and individual actions to reduce major risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity and smoking.

And these are no longer only diseases of the developed world: some 80% of all CVD deaths worldwide took place in developing, low and middle-income countries, while these countries also accounted for 86% of the global CVD disease burden. It is estimated that by 2010, CVD will be the leading cause of death in developing countries.

Extent of the problem

The major CVDs include:
  • Coronary (or ischaemic) heart disease (heart attack)
  • Cerebrovascular disease (stroke)
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Heart failure
  • Rheumatic heart disease

Of the 16.7 million deaths from CVDs every year, 7.2 million are due to ischaemic heart disease, 5.5 million to cerebrovascular disease, and an additional 3.9 million to hypertensive and other heart conditions. As well, at least 20 million people survive heart attacks and strokes every year, a significant proportion of them requiring costly clinical care, which puts a huge burden on long-term care resources. CVD affects people in their mid-life years, undermining the socioeconomic development, not only of affected individuals, but families and nations. Lower socieconomic groups generally have a greater prevalence of risk factors, diseases and mortality in developed countries, and a similar pattern is emerging as the CVD epidemic matures in developing countries.

The time lag effect of risk factors for CVD means that the full effect of past exposure to behavioural risk factors, especially among children, will only be seen in the future. Unless preventive and management efforts are embraced worldwide, the global burden of CVD death and disease will continue to rise.

Why is this happening?

The rise in CVDs reflects a significant change in diet habits, physical activity levels, and tobacco consumption worldwide as a result of industrialization, urbanization, economic development and food market globalization. People are consuming a more energy-dense, nutrient-poor diet and are less physically active. Imbalanced nutrition, reduced physical activity and increased tobacco consumption are the key lifestyle factors. High blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, overweight and obesity - and the chronic disease of type 2 diabetes - are among the major biological risk factors. Unhealthy dietary practices include the high consumption of saturated fats, salt and refined carbohydrates, as well as low consumption of fruit and vegetables. These risk factors tend to cluster.

What can be done?

Those who have already had heart attacks and strokes are at high risk of recurrences and death. This risk can be substantially lowered with a combination of drugs - statins for cholesterol lowering and low-doses of common blood pressure lowering drugs and aspirin - given daily to people at elevated risk of heart attack and stroke.

However, the most cost-effective methods of reducing risk among an entire population are population-wide interventions, combining effective policies and broad health promotion policies. These should be the first to be considered in all settings. In many countries, too much focus is being placed on one-on-one interventions among people at medium risk for CVD. A better use of resources would be to focus on those at elevated risk and to use other resources to introduce population-wide efforts to reduce risk factors through multiple economic and educational policies and programs. These risk factors include diet and physical activity. The dietary intake of fats, especially their quality, strongly influences the risk of CVD like coronary heart disease and stroke, through effects on blood lipids, thrombosis, blood pressure, arterial function, arrythogenesis and inflammation. Excess salt has a significant impact on blood pressure levels.

Compelling evidence indicates that at least three dietary strategies are effective in preventing CVD, and in helping manage the disease:

  • Substitute nonhydrogenated unsaturated fats (especially polyunsaturated fat) for saturated and trans-fats;
  • Increase consumption of omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil or plant sources;
  • Consume a diet high in fruits vegetables, nuts and whole grains, and low in refined grains.
  • Avoid excessively salty or sugary foods.
  • At least 30 minutes of regular physical activity daily
  • Avoid smoking
  • Maintain a healthy weight.

Effective interventions

  • In the United Kingdom, a government-promoted program in consort with the food and drink manufacturing industry successfully reduced salt content in almost a quarter of manufactured foods over several years.
  • In Mauritius, cholesterol reduction was achieved largely by a government-led effort switching the main source of cooking oil from palm to soya bean oil.
  • Korea has worked to retain elements of the traditional diet. Civil society and government initiatives led mass media campaigns to promote local foods, traditional cooking methods and the need to support local farmers.
  • In Japan, government-led health campaigns have greatly reduced general salt intake and together with increased blood pressure treatment have reduced blood pressure population-wide. Meanwhile stroke rates have fallen by more than 70%.
  • In Finland, community-based and national interventions, including health promotion and nutrition interventions, led to population-wide reductions in cholesterol and other risks, closely followed by a precipitous decline in heart disease and stroke mortality.
  • In the USA, a decrease in saturated fat intake in the late 1960s began the large decline in coronary heart disease deaths seen in the last few decades there.
  • In New Zealand, introduction of labelling logos for healthier foods led many companies to reformulate their products. The benefits included large decreases in the salt content of processed foods.

Anaemia Prevention And Control

Anaemia is common throughout the world. Its main cause, iron deficiency, is the most prevalent nutritional deficiency in the world. Several infections related to hygiene, sanitation, safe water and water management are significant contributors to anaemia in addition to iron deficiency. These include malaria, schistosomiasis and hookworm.

The disease and how it affects people

Anaemia is a condition that occurs when the red blood cells do not carry enough oxygen to the tissues of the body. Anaemia affects all population groups. However the most susceptible groups are pregnant women and young children. In the milder form, anaemia is “silent”, without symptoms. In the more severe form, anaemia is associated with fatigue, weakness, dizziness and drowsiness. The signs include loss of normal colour in the skin (in fair skinned people) and also in the lips, tongue nail beds and the blood vessels in the white of the eye. Without treatment, anaemia can worsen and become an underlying cause of chronic ill health, such as impaired fetal development during pregnancy, delayed cognitive development and increased risk of infection in young children, and reduced physical capacity in all people. Low birth weight infants, young children and women of childbearing age are particularly at risk of anaemia. Women of childbearing age need to absorb 2-3 times the amount of iron required by men or older women.

The cause

The main causes of anaemia are nutritional and infectious. They usually coexist in the same individual and make anaemia worst.

Among the nutrition factors contributing to anaemia, the most common one is iron deficiency. It is due to a diet that is monotonous, but rich in substances (phytates) inhibiting iron absorption so that dietary iron cannot be utilised by the body. Iron deficiency may also be aggravated by poor nutritional status, especially when it is associated with deficiencies in folic acid, vitamin A or B12, as is often the case in populations living in developing countries

With regard to infections, malaria is another major cause of anaemia : it affects 300-500 million people, and in endemic areas it may be the primary cause of half of all severe anaemia cases (WHO, 2000). Hookworm infection and in some places schistosomiasis also contribute to anaemia. Approximately 44 million pregnant women have hookworm infections and 20 million people are severely infected with schistosomiasis. Anaemia can also be due to excessive blood loss, such as gastrointestinal infections associated with diarrhoea. The most important water-related causes of anaemia are malnutrition and water-borne or water-related infections.

Distribution

Anaemia is a common problem throughout the world and iron deficiency is the most prevalent nutritional deficiency in the world. It affects mainly the poorest segment of the population, particularly where malnutrition is predominant and the population exposed to a high risk of water-related infection.

Scope of the problem

Nine out of ten anaemia sufferers live in developing countries, about 2 billion people suffer from anaemia and an even larger number of people present iron deficiency (WHO, 2000). Anaemia may contribute to up to 20% of maternal deaths.

Intervention

Full discussion of strategies towards anaemia prevention are beyond the scope of this Fact Sheet. Because anaemia is the result of multiple factors, the identification of these factors and of the causes and type of anaemia is important. Important actions include addressing underlying causes correcting iron deficiency, treatment of underlying disease processes (in particular nutritional deficiencies - Folic acid, Vitamin A and B12).

In children, promoting breastfeeding and proper complementary foods are important in controlling anaemia.

Improving hygiene, sanitation and water supply; and improving water resource management to contribute to control of schistosomiasis and malaria where they occur are important contributory measures in prevention of anaemia.

Anaemia prevention and control

Anaemia is the world's second leading cause of disability and thus one of the most serious global public health problems. Anaemia affects over half of pre-school children and pregnant women in developing countries and at least 30-40% in industrialized countries. In poorer malaria endemic countries anaemia is one of the commonest preventable causes of death in children under 5 years and in pregnant women.

Reducing the burden of anaemia will make a major contribution to achieving several UN Millennium Development Goals. Since the greatest burden of anaemia falls on the most "hard-to-reach" individuals, any programme that aims to reduce anaemia will need to be accessible by these groups. Primary health care policies and pro¬grammes must be a cornerstone of health care systems. Interventions which have been shown to impact on anaemia include improving nutrition and iron status and treating helminth and malaria infections.

The WHO Anaemia Working Group first met in June 2000 to review the relationship between haemoglobin concentrations and clinically symptomatic anaemia, with particular focus on cut-off levels for blood donation. This is why the Secretariat of the Group has traditionally been housed in the Department of Essential Health Technologies.

The WHO/UNICEF statement on anaemia underlines its multifactorial aetiology; hence the Group is now represented by diverse WHO programmes that need to address the prevention and control of anaemia. Roll Back Malaria is exploring the use of haemoglobin levels as a marker of success of malaria control interventions.

Early detection of anaemia in pregnant women is reflected in the vision of the Making Pregnancy Safer initiative. HIV/AIDS guid elines state that a haemoglobin estimation and HIV test are the absolute minimum before anti-retroviral therapy, meaning that simple, reliable and affordable screening tools must be widely available if 3 million people are to receive ARVs by 2005.

One such tool is the Haemoglobin Colour Scale, now commercially available to assist remote settings in the detection and management of anaemia.
